First school's status change is approved

GRANGE View First School in Widdrington will change its status to Church of England in September.

Governors approached Northumberland County Council about changing from a community school to a C of E Voluntary Controlled First School.

Statutory notices were published in April, after consultation.

The county council's executive last week agreed to the change of category, which will enable the school to build upon its partnership working, and establish a closer link with the Church of England.

But executive member for community services, Coun Lesley Rickerby, expressed concern over a perceived lack of consultation.

"There are parents who are going to feel as though a choice has been made for them that they don't want to be made.

"It appeared the governors made the decision, not the parents.

"I would be happier if the proposals had come to the table as community-led rather than governor-led."

The change of category also aims to help the retention of future pupils contemplating attending the alternative C of E VA First School in a nearby village.

There will be no change to the catchment area, and the school will continue to serve all members of its community, regardless of faith.
