Football club wins vote to net £100,000
BLYTH Town FC spent the weekend celebrating after hitting the jackpot and scooping £100,000 in the Budweiser Club Futures campaign.
The club found out at midnight on Thursday that they had picked up the most votes against another seven clubs from across the UK.
And club chairwoman Sandra Orr said it was not just a boost for Blyth Town FC, but for Blyth as a town.
She said: “We had the advantage of being in the north east, and Blyth in particular as they support their own.
“Blyth have had so many bad things said about them lately, but this is a feel good story and everyone got behind it big time.
“The reaction from people in and outside of the north east has been astonishing, and heart warming.
“As a volunteer, you are working very hard, and it is time consuming, but this has really lifted us up.
“The feedback has been tremendous.”
Now with a total of £150,000 to spend on improvements, they will extend the community room, which will be able to be utilised during the week, and the multi-use games area will be resurfaced with a 3G pitch that can be hired out for use amongst the community.
Sandra added: “This is really going to put Blyth on the map in a good way, we are going to have some of the best facilities in the north east.
Blyth MP Ronnie Campbell was one of the first to congratulate the club.
He said: “I am delighted to congratulate Blyth Town FC who has now secured the £100,000 grant after they went head to head with seven other bidders to win the grant.
“The programme shines a light on grassroots football and helps clubs to help themselves, making each team more sustainable within the community.
“This is an unbelievable achievement for the club and will do so much in terms of financial stability for them.
“This will enable the team to become more sustainable within the community and I hope this will inspire future generations of footballers.
“I would like to extend my very best wishes to the club.”
