Garden waste scheme set to make a return

GARDENERS in the county will be able to have their garden waste collected again from next month.

Collections will begin on either March 4 or 11 – depending on where residents live – and will continue until November.

Residents who used the kerbside collection service last year have been sent a letter from Northumberland County Council inviting them to take part again.

The service costs £23 for each 240-litre wheeled bin for fortnightly collections, with extra bins available for rent.

Anyone who pays for the service online, or by debit or credit card, before the end of March will be entered into a free prize draw to win one of ten prizes of £20 worth of vouchers.

Paul Jones, head of waste management at the council, said: “Our recycling rates across the county improve year-on-year and this initiative is set to continue that trend with the enthusiastic support of the many thousands of keen gardeners who contribute to Northumberland’s green agenda.

“We are working hard at increasing the number of properties covered by the scheme each year to assist with this.

“For anyone not already involved I would urge them to consider participating in a project that contributes to a better quality of life for all of us.”

Residents can put leaves, grass, hedge and tree cuttings, and woody material – less than 10cm in diameter – in the bins.

No garden waste should be put in general waste bins.

Residents who do not sign up to the scheme can take their garden waste to their local Household Waste Recovery Centre.

Residents who want to join the kerbside scheme should e-mail ask@northumberland.gov.uk or call 0845 600 6400 to see if their property can be included.
