Genealogy project gets cash boost

A genealogy project in Newbiggin has been awarded a grant of almost £45,000 to create a record of the town.

The project has received the funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will enable them to make a record of everyone who has lived in Newbiggin, using public records and family histories.

And on Saturday, September 21, a family history workshop and public meeting will be held at Newbiggin Maritime Centre from 1pm to 5pm.

Hilton Dawson, from the project’s management committee, said: “This is a unique undertaking which already has more than 3,300 people included in our database and which offers huge potential for story-telling, publications, theatre, displays and events all about the rich history and community life of Newbiggin.

“It is vital that we recruit even more volunteers to become members, to help run the project, to be trained in family history research and other skills and to help expand the project by providing the sort of information which all families have in their possession.

“Please come along and contribute any information you have and to join in with a unique, exciting project. No other community has ever done this. Working together, we can do it really well.”
