ONE of the world’s largest sea vessels is installing a weather-testing station off the coast at Blyth for use in developing the next generation of wind turbines.

The MPI Adventure has been commissioned by Blyth’s National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) to install a 750-tonne offshore anemometry structure including a meteorological mast in the North Sea.

The station, fitted with the latest technologies for measuring wind and collecting data on marine conditions, is being installed three nautical miles east of Blyth to measure wind speeds in readiness for the creation of an offshore wind demonstration site.

The MPI Adventure arrived at the Port of Tyne at South Shields last Thursday prior to heading out to sea off Blyth.

Andrew Moffat, chief executive officer at the port, said: “The MPI Adventure is the world’s most advanced wind turbine installation vessel, and this operation demonstrates the capacity and full capabilities of the port in handling and accommodating vessels servicing the offshore wind, oil and gas industry.”

The 139m-long vessel is designed to transport, lift and install wind turbines and their foundations.

The vessel’s six jackup legs have been lowered to the riverbed to create an anchored platform.
