HARD work has proved to be productive for a group of young people who picked up a top award after spending six months refurbishing their youth club.

Blyth’s Silx Teen Bar, the largest participation youth provider in the area, was awarded two first places at the Northumberland Finest Awards held at Linden Hall on Friday.

The ceremony, organised by Northumberland Youth Service, saw Silx being awarded a participation award after 30 young people worked on refurbishing the teen bar facility, based in Church Street.

The youngsters were assisted by artists from Creative Ginger, who have previously worked on Blyth skate park, in designing a new theme, colour scheme and murals for the entire interior of the former night club.

Through its 1st Step Project, Silx Teen Bar was also awarded the most prestigious award of the evening, the honour for the project that has made the greatest impact in the lives of young people.

The 1st Step project involves working with issues, including employability and training, and has supported more than 200 young people aged 16 to 25 in the last 12 months.

Silx Teen Bar’s senior youth worker Jackie Long said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our organisation, youth workers and young people.

“To be presented with two awards at the Northumberland Finest Awards demonstrates the positive difference our youth work has made to the lives of the young people in the Blyth area.”
