Dozens of new houses could be build on the site of a former hospital.

A planning application has been made to build 66 new homes for the elderly on the former Ashington Hospital site in West View.

And the proposals by Bernicia Group Ltd also include an outline planning application to build a further 38 residential properties.

The current site had been vacated in 2004 with the former hospital – where thousands of babies had been born over the years – being demolished and the land currently standing empty.

The plans by housing company Bernicia include 40 two-bedroom flats for social housing and 26 bungalows – made up of 20 two-bedroom houses for social housing and a further six two-bedroom properties.

Also included in the proposals are associated landscaping and highway works, including creating a new entrance off Roseneath Court and widening the road.

As part of its planning submission, Bernicia wrote: “The application includes three development cells which outline planning for further residential dwellings will be sought alongside this detailed application as part of a hybrid application.

“The site was previously the former Ashington Hospital site until 2004 and has since been demolished and is currently underdeveloped land.”

There are also plans to include 56 car parking spaces, three disabled spaces and 18 cycle spaces.

The deadline for any comments on the plans is January 12, with Northumberland County Council’s planning department hoping to make a decision before March 19.

A spokesperson from the Bernicia Group was unavailable to comment on the application.

The Bernicia Group provides more than 8,000 homes throughout the north east, with almost 6,000 of those located in south east Northumberland.

The application is part of their pledge to build 200 new affordable homes over the next two years, with plans to build more in the future.

A previous planning application in 2008 for outline permission to build a new college facility on the former hospital site was withdrawn.

And in 2007, an outline planning application to build houses and create a new open space on the former site was approved.
