A FORMER chairman of governors at Cramlington Learning Village has been made a Member of the British Empire (MBE).

Derek Nicholson, a governor of the learning village since 1975, was given the award in the Queen’s new year honours list for services to education.

His long association with the school includes two periods as chairman of governors, the first in the 1980s and the second from 2005 to last year.

Derek, pictured, also a governor at the King’s School in Tynemouth, has spent his whole working life in university administration.

From 1983 until his retirement in 2002 he was registrar of Newcastle University with overall responsibility for its academic administrative services.

He holds the title of registrar emeritus and is an honorary fellow of the university.

Derek, of Newcastle, said: “I am surprised and really delighted by the award of this honour.

“I have always felt very fortunate, as a school governor, to be associated with the life and work of Cramlington Learning Village.

“I look forward to continuing to enjoy my close association with the school and to supporting the school’s primary aim of giving every individual pupil the opportunity to maximise his or her personal potential.

“The success of Cramlington Learning Village stems from the firm belief of staff and governors that all students are entitled to a first-class curriculum, to learning and teaching of the highest quality, and to an environment in which they are happy, cared for, and encouraged to be life-long learners.”

Arthur Row, of Blyth, a deputy manager at the Department for Work and Pensions at Longbenton, was also made an MBE.
