Hundreds watch as troops return home - Video

HUNDREDS of spectators lined the streets of Ashington today to watch more than 250 soldiers march through the town to mark their return from war.

The event celebrated the return of troops who serve with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, who have been based in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan for a six-month tour of duty.

Seven men from the battalion were killed in action and more than a dozen suffered serious injuries while supporting Afghan forces with security patrols and operations against the Taliban.

On Station Road, Alan Shearer, the deputy lieutenant of Northumberland, and the Duchess of Northumberland took the salute along with the Regimental Secretary, Brigadier Ian Liles.

The homecoming parade was organised by Northumberland County Council to give the public the opportunity to show their support for the servicemen and women and welcome them back.

The troops started the parade in Woodhorn Road and marched through the pedestrian area of Station Road before travelling to Morpeth for a parade of the town.
