AN ASHINGTON apprentice has scooped a prestigious award for outstanding achievements at Northumberland College.

Jason Janczyk, now a qualified electrical apprentice at UK Coal’s Butterwell surface mine, was among five winners presented with awards at an event last week.

It is the second year running the 36-year-old has won an award, having been recognised for outstanding achievement in his advanced apprenticeship in engineering in 2012.

Site manager at Butterwell, Trevor Meek, welcomed Jason’s recognition and said more young apprentices must have an opportunity to enter the workplace.

The awards were presented by minister of state Matthew Hancock at the college’s Kirkley Hall campus.
