An author and illustrator from Cramlington have teamed up to created a series of children’s books set during the First World War to coincide with the centenary this year.
The Adventures of Bertie Blue follows an army carrier pigeon and his captain, seeing them through battles in the trenches to the famous Christmas Day Truce of 1914.
Author Steve Halsey and illustrator Emma Friel have released two books – Bertie Blue, the Bravest Pigeon in the World, and Bertie Blue in Paris – are available now, with further books set to be published later in the year.
Emma said: “We hope the books will both entertain and teach children about the Great War, and with the centenary fast approaching the time is right for this pigeon to be let out of the basket.”
The books priced at £5.99 are available to buy at www.emmafrieldoodlebug.co.uk
