Lessons mark World Book Day

BUDDING bookworms brought literature to life in Blyth, a day of activities designed to promote reading.

Bede Academy Primary children devoted themselves to the mighty word in a variety of lessons to mark World Book Day.

All age groups, from nursery to Year 6, put their unique slant on popular tomes, ranging from Billy Goat’s Gruff to the Three Little Pigs, Kung Fu Panda to the Lion King, the Tailor of Gloucester to football stories.

As well as reading the stories, they took part in related activities including music, dance, drama, baking, bridge building, crafts and textiles.

Those who chose the Jolly Postman got to take part in an orienteering exercise around the school grounds in Blyth, while nursery children planted ‘dinosaur egg’ bulbs in the garden.

English lead at Bede Primary Nicola Blackburn said: “Reading is the basis of all education and the day was to celebrate literacy and to promote books.

“The children were given the chance to choose which activity they wanted to take part in and they really enjoyed themselves.

“We have always had very good readers at Bede Academy, which is great because it is such an important building block and an activity which children can share.”
