Man found guilty of Blyth murder

A BLYTH man has been found guilty of murder.

Stephen Tiffin had denied the charge of killing Jason Lockwood, but a jury returned a guilty verdict at his trial at Newcastle Crown Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Tiffin, 29, of Ingoe Close, Blyth, was accused of killing the 40-year-old on Valentine’s Day last year, alongside Kyle Gordon, who had previously admitted his part in the killing.

Between them they beat Mr Lockwood until he was unconscious and then set fire to his flat in Noredale House, Blyth.

Mr Lockwood died of smoke inhalation.

The jury, who deliberated over the verdict for just over five hours, unanimously found Tiffin guilty of one charge of murder.

He will be sentenced in due course at Newcastle Crown Court.

Judge John Milford said: “Stephen Tiffin you have been convicted by jury or murder.

“The only sentence I can pass upon you is life imprisonment but I have to decide what the minimum term should be before you will be considered for parole.

“That will be fixed at a sentencing hearing in the next few weeks.”

Twenty-four-year-old Gordon, of Plaver Close, South Beach, will also be sentenced at a later date.
