It was buckets and spades at the ready when more than 100 people flocked to Newbiggin by the Sea to battle it out in a sandcastle competition.

First prize went to a mermaid sculpture, with other entries including traditional castles with flags and shells.

Later in the day, local brass band JayEss entertained the crowds at the town’s bandstand.

Lynn Burns, chairwoman of Newbiggin Portas Town Team, which organised the event to encourage more people to visit the seaside town, said: “It was pretty cloudy in the morning but luckily brightened as the day wore on.

“Everyone had a great time, and the children loved the free balloon animals on the promenade.

“I have never seen so many people on the beach in a long time.

“Newbiggin by the Sea is a fantastic place for a day out and we want more people to come and enjoy our beach and promenade.

“More events are lined up for the future.”
