More male foster carers are being sought by Northumberland County Council.
In the run up to Father’s Day this weekend, the authority’s family placement service is looking for more male foster carers – whether they are single or part of a couple; and whether they would be the main carer or support the main carer.
Main foster carer, Marcus Nicholson, from south east Northumberland, said: “I always wanted to have the chance of working with children, and when I was made redundant it gave us the opportunity as a family to do something that makes a real difference to children.
“You learn about a lot of subjects which are uncomfortable, regardless of whether you are male or female.
“This is part of the environment in which you may be working with a child.”
Coun Robert Arckless, the county council’s policy board member for children’s services, said: “Men make a huge contribution to the upbringing of children and young people in foster care.
“For many looked after children, living with a male foster carer has been their first positive experience of an adult male.”
