MP calls for review into breast implant scandal
BLYTH Valley MP Ronnie Campbell has demanded a review of medical guidelines following the breast implant scandal.
Up to 40,000 women in the UK have been fitted with PIP implants which contain industrial-strength silicon.
Mr Campbell has co-sponsored a cross-party Commons motion urging an urgent review.
“The lack of adequate protection against faulty medical devices is alarming,” he said.
“The evidence of failure in breast implants greatly understates the dangers revealed in the rest of Europe.
“Recalls are rising but manufacturers continue to suppress information on failures.”
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said that private clinics which fitted such implants have a “moral duty” to remove them.
And the Independent Healthcare Advisory Service warned that women are “more confused and anxious than ever.”
