Mumps cases reported on increase in the region
MORE than 100 cases of mumps were reported in the north east during the last quarter, latest figures from the Health Protection Agency have revealed.
A total of 133 cases of mumps were diagnosed in the region between April and June.
Of these, 56 per cent being reported in people aged 14 to 24 – compared with 32 cases in the same period last year.
The HPA is urging teenagers and young adults to protect themselves against vaccine preventable infections, such as mumps.
The latest data also shows a national increase in measles cases, almost twice as many confirmed cases in England and Wales in the first six months of 2012 (964) compared to the same period in 2011 (497).
