New footbridge will help open up green space around burn

A NEW footbridge has been built in Cramlington to make it easier for people to get to Northburn Community Centre.
County councillor Wayne Daley, of Cramlington North, picked up the £1,700 bill for the bridge using his member’s allowance.
The crossing has been built in partnership with Northumberland Wildlife Trust and the Environment Agency as part of their Living Waterways project.
The construction of the footbridge is intended to make land around Horton Burn more accessible to encourage more people to visit it and help look after it.
It follows the founding of the Friends of Horton Burn to carry out litter-picks and encourage residents to make the most of the site.
Emma Pearson, Living Waterways project officer for the Wildlife Trust, said: “The Northburn community has enthusiastically joined forces with the project with some fantastic results.
“There have been numerous litter picks, a family fun day and in the autumn, a hedgerow and small wetland area will be planted up at Northburn to further enhance the area.
“Living Waterways hopes to continue working with the residents around Horton Burn to further improve the burn for people and wildlife, and this bridge is a really important part of the whole scheme.”
Coun Daley said: “The bridge is a great feature on an area of open land close to houses and the community centre.
“It will mean there is a safe crossing point over a waterway and an opportunity for local people, especially with children, to walk across some unspoilt land and learn about how wildlife coexists with urban living.”
