A new restaurant is aiming to be soaring after opening as part of a multi-million pound redevelopment.

Flying Hippo has chosen Newcastle Airport as the first venue for its unique new family dining concept, being part of a £14m development programme.

A total of 30 new jobs have been created at the diner, which focuses on local suppliers from Dropswell Farm and Manners Butchers to The Geordie Bakers.

The menu features everything from proper cooked breakfasts and American-style pancakes to a range of ribs, wings, burgers and pizza – all under the special 15 minute service promise.

There is also a wide selection of drinks on the menu plus a children’s interactive play zone and special family dining booths containing state-of-the-art tablets.

Chief marketing officer, Lucy Knowles, said: “In a fast moving travel environment, we need to make sure we cater for someone with minutes to play with, as well as those who have time to spare for a relaxing meal.

“Flying Hippo does just that and wraps the whole experience in a colourful, vibrant and fun atmosphere.

“This is a first for Newcastle and we have exciting plans to introduce the concept in other parts of the country.”

As part of the departure lounge redevelopment, an exciting new beer venue has also opened, The Beer House, bringing lovers of real ale a wide selection of beers, wines and spirits with a spotlight on locally sourced on-tap brews and delicious hand-held favourites such as a pulled pork and roast beef stotties.

Flying Hippo is now open and can be found in the airside departures lounge.
