New Wednesday market for Blyth
THE trial of a new market is due to launch in Blyth next week.
The new market – which launches on Wednesday, October 3 – aims to provide a service for shoppers who are no longer able to go to the Wednesday market that is closing in Cramlington, as well as providing a new attraction for visitors to Blyth.
The market is being jointly organised by Northumberland County Council and Blyth Town Council, and stalls are being offered to traders displaced by the closure of the Cramlington Market and Car Boot fair.
The market will be held in Blyth Market Place and run from 8.30am to 1.30pm, providing a different type of market from those normally seen in Blyth – with traders from Cramlington being car boot and flea market type.
In Blyth it will form a new style with space for traders who want to sell or barter merchandise or sell high quality used goods with items sold from tables not on the ground as in other car boot type markets.
Local organisations will also be able to raise funds by trading and selling goods.
Coun Alan Thompson, executive member responsible for the council’s management of markets across Northumberland, said: “I am very familiar with the concerns of the shopkeepers, business people and market traders in Blyth who have expressed their concerns about trading in a very difficult economic climate.
“Markets add to the vibrancy and vitality of towns and we are looking at a number of opportunities to expand what existing markets offer and to take up new opportunities.
“Working with Blyth Town Council we have seen an opportunity to provide a new market for the South East area and are trying this out to see how popular it might be.”
Blyth Mayor, Coun Kath Nisbet, added: “I welcome the opportunity to further utilise Blyth Market Place for this exciting new initiative.
“Not only does it offer an additional facility for Blyth residents but it should attract a high level of new visitors to Blyth, many of whom travel around the region in search of bargains available at these very popular markets.”
“If you are interested in trading at this or any other markets in the area please contact the markets officer on 07900 052447 from Monday, October 1, onwards.”
The current Cramlington Market and Car Boot Fair is due to close tomorrow (Wednesday) due to a retail development at its current site.
