Newcastle Falcons cheer on Teenage Cancer Trust runners
GEOFF Parling and Andy Buist from Newcastle Falcons will give a boost to over 80 runners taking part in the Great North Run for Teenage Cancer Trust this weekend.
The pair are dropping by the pre-race pasta party held by the charity at The Vermont Hotel in Newcastle on Saturday night, to give the runners some words of wisdom and wish them the best of luck for the race.
The 80 runners are expected to raise thousands for Teenage Cancer Trust and their 1million appeal for a new teenage cancer unit at the RVI in Newcastle which, if enough cash is raised, is set to open by the end of next year.
Parling says, "It's fantastic to see so many people geared up for running for Teenage Cancer Trust - there are some really inspirational people taking part and it would be great to see them raise as much money as possible so we can get the Teenage Cancer Trust unit in Newcastle open. I'll certainly be giving them a cheer when they cross the finish line."
Racing for TCT will be Jim Purcell of Tyne and Wear, who at 87 years of age, is the oldest competitor in the race, and eleven soldiers from Catterick Queens Royal Lancers.
Jim Purcell said: "This is the 22nd year I'll run the Great North Run and I'm incredibly proud to be doing so for Teenage Cancer Trust. The young people I've met through the charity are so courageous, they are inspirational."
David Tyler, age 26 from Bedlington is running for the Toma Fund for TCT in memory of Jordan Thompson.
David, who was treated for cancer at the RVI said, "This is the first time that I've taken part in a race like this but am really looking forward to it.
"I've been doing lots of training so am ready to take on the challenge and raise as much cash as I can."
He continues, "TCT units aren't like normal wards - young people can meet teenagers in the same situation which really makes such a difference."
The pre-race pasta party will be held at The Vermont Hotel, who are announcing at the event that they will be supporting Teenage Cancer Trust with their campaign.
Teresa Brown from The Vermont Hotel says, "It's so important that teenagers from the North East have access to a specialist treatment centre, and so we are 100% behind TCT to make sure they achieve their objective. We're going to be supporting them all the way."
