Northumberland votes Leave as Brexit victory is confirmed

A total of 96,699 votes to 82,022.was declared in the county shortly after the national result revealed a victory for Brexit.

Geoff Paul, counting officer for Northumberland, declared the result of the referendum in the county at Blyth Sports Centre at 6am this morning.

The turnout was 74.4%.

A spokeswoman for the county council said: "Northumberland is one of the largest council areas geographically in the country, which makes logistics challenging when organising elections and counts.

"Ballot boxes have to be brought from remote settlements such as Kielder, and isolated communities like Holy Island. "For this referendum there were 224 polling stations across 219 facilities and 562 staff have been employed to run them."

52,147 people applied for a postal vote, and 91.4% of those were returned.

In Northumberland:

The total number of ballot papers counted was: 178,815

The number of votes cast in favour of REMAIN was 82,022

The number of votes cast in favour of LEAVE was 96,699

The number of ballot papers rejected was 94
