NUFC stars visit brave youngster

A YOUNGSTER has been given a special treat to put the smile back on his face as he recovered from a major operation.
Callum Brown, from Derwent Road, Seaton Sluice, whose family are hoping to raise £50,000 so he can undergo revolutionary surgery in America, received a visit from two Newcastle United stars after undergoing surgery at Newcastle’s RVI.
Defenders James Perch and Davide Santon popped into the hospital to put the smile back on Callum’s face on Thursday, after he underwent a painful operation on his hips.
The seven-year-old’s parents Sharon and Neil Brown are trying to raise the money so their son, a cerebral palsy sufferer, can have an operation called a selective dorsal rhizotomy at St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri.
But before he can jet off to the US, the brave youngster had to undergo further surgery on his hips.
Sharon said: “On Valentine’s Day Callum had to have an operation on his hips to put the ball joint back in the socket as his cerebral palsy has been pulling both out.
“He loves Newcastle United and it’s his dream to become a goalkeeper, so when James Perch and Davide Santon came to see him in hospital he was over the moon.
“They spent half an hour chatting with him and brought him a signed shirt.
“He’s been asked to be the mascot at the Stoke game in April, and he’s just made up about it, he can’t wait.
“He was really looking forward to meeting the players because he had been in so much pain, it was something to take his mind off it all.”
So far Sharon has raised £21,000 towards the £50,000 needed for the operation, and is hoping NUFC bosses allow a charity collection at the game.
The fundraising is set to continue with more than 20 people taking part in a parachute jump in April. Any bussinesses willing to sponsor the jumpers are asked to contact Sharon.
Sharon is also planning a pie-and-peas supper and quiz night on Friday, March 2, at the South Beach pub in Blyth.
