A former gatehouse in the county will open to the public later this month in association with Heritage Open Days.

Morpeth Castle, once a remote Border stronghold, will be open free from Friday, April 25, to Sunday, April 27.

At 3pm on the Saturday and Sunday, living history group, The Sealed Knot, will perform re-enactments of scenes from the 1644 Civil War siege of Morpeth Castle.

The open days will give the public an opportunity to see inside the building, which was originally a gatehouse and added in about 1350 at the entrance to the castle proper.

All are welcome at these free open days and there is no need to book.
