Paige appeals for volunteers to get involved

A teenage first aider from south east Northumberland is calling for more volunteers to lead the next generation of young life-savers.

To coincide with National Volunteers’ Week, Paige Dawson, a youth leader and first aider with St John Ambulance’s Ashington unit, is appealing for more people to come forward to operate as adult leaders with the organisation in the county.

Paige, 18, from Choppington, joined the first aid charity when she was just 14 as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award.

She loved it so much she now does around 20 hours per week volunteering.

Her first aid training has been put into practice on duty and in the local community, including helping a man in a shop near where she lives who had collapsed after a seizure.

Paige is now applying for apprenticeships in healthcare and has ambitions to be a paramedic or an A&E nurse.

“My voluntary role with St John Ambulance has really helped me shape my career choice, but you don’t have to want a role within the medical profession to volunteer with the charity,” she said.

Call (01924) 262726 or email north-east-hr@sja.org.uk for more about volunteering.
