Pair raise £18,000 in memory of Helen
MORE than £18,000 has been raised in memory of an Ashington woman.
Mark Robertson, tragically lost his wife, Helen, at the age of 32 in August 2011 as a result of a rare complication of labour called Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE).
Their daughter, Niamh, survived, but never got the chance to meet her mother.
In memory of Helen, Mark decided to fundraise for a charity close to her heart, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, and for the AFE Foundation, a charity which supports survivors of the condition, and bereaved families.
Mark, from Ashington, decided to cycle over 500 miles from Woodhorn Museum to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Helen’s favourite city, accompanied by his friend, Kristian Headland.
Mark said: “To celebrate her memory and the happiness she gave to me and everyone who knew her, myself and Kristian cycled from Woodhorn Museum, to Paris.”
Friends and family organised their own events, and took part in sponsored bungee jumps and parachute jumps, to help push the total over £18,000.
“Organising this ride and the training that went in to it has been one of the things that really kept me going following Helen’s death,” added Mark.
“I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the level of support we have received over the past year and this really kept me focussed.
“Reaching the Eiffel Tower in Paris was a hugely emotional and poignant moment for me, and whilst it felt like a huge achievement it was also heart-wrenching to know that Helen wasn’t there with me.
“I hope that as Niamh gets older she is proud of what we achieved and can begin to understand just how special her mother was.”
