A FUNDRAISING drive to send a youngster to America for pioneering surgery has been given a double boost.

Sharon and Neil Brown are trying to raise £50,000 so their son Callum, a cerebral palsy sufferer, can have the operation, called a selective dorsal rhizotomy.

The family, of Derwent Road in Seaton Sluice, have now raised more than £20,000 towards the cost of the op, to be carried out at St Louis in Missouri.

They hope the op will enable the seven-year-old, set to undergo further surgery on his hips next month, to take his first steps unaided.

Earlier this year, Blagdon Amateur Thespian Society staged Jack and the Beanstalk at Cramlington Village Community Centre, and this week it handed over the panto’s £700 proceeds to Callum.

Mum Sharon said: “We are so grateful for everyone who is helping us to reach our target. We are getting there slowly but surely.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to the society for donating its proceeds to us.

“An auction held on Thursday night raised a further £500, so it wasn’t a bad week.

“We are now preparing for a parachute jump, with more than 20 people taking part, in April, and we’re looking for any businesses willing to sponsor the jumpers.”

Sharon is also planning a pie-and-peas supper and quiz night on Friday, March 2, at the South Beach pub in Blyth.
