Petition looks to have won 20mph limit

RESIDENTS petitioning for a 20mph speed limit look set to have their wishes granted.

In February Northumberland County Council’s south east area committee accepted a petition from residents calling for the speed limit in the Parkside Chase and Parkside Dale area to be reduced from 30mph to 20mph.

And last week the committee heard how the scheme was expected to cost around £6,000 – money which would need to be funded by Cramlington Town Council.

And on Thursday, Cramlington Town Council agreed in principle to contribute towards the cost of introducing the new limit.

Coun Wayne Daley said: “20mph zones in Northumberland should be standard around schools as they are in North Tyneside.

“Until the county council get their head around this basic issue, the town council has to support those residents who want these safety zones.

“It is vital that consultation takes place to make sure that any schemes command the support of local people.”

Petitioner Barry Flux said: “It is beyond belief that this area does not have a 20mph limit, especially when you consider that there is a primary school and play park in the area and that there is a steep gradient on Newlyn Drive, the main through road.

“The large number of residents who have signed this petition demonstrates the strength of feeling on this issue, there are many concerns in the area about traffic which need resolving including inconsiderate parking.

“I would urge all residents who signed the petition to respond to the consultation.

“More than 100 residents have signed this petition, this shows that there is strong support for 20mph in Parkside Chase and Parkside Dale – the strength of feeling has pushed this onto the agenda of Northumberland County Council and Cramlington Town Council and I am pleased we are a step closer to 20mph signs being erected.”
