Petitioners in protest over government’s ‘Big Brother’ proposals

A PETITION containing almost 140,000 signatures has been handed to Blyth Valley MP Ronnie Campbell in opposition to a new privacy law.
The group 38 Degrees took the petition containing names of people who are against plans for new powers included in the Communications Bill, which is currently in draft form.
Jamie Curle, from Blyth, who organised the hand over, said: “The government wants new powers to invade our privacy, every single day.
“They want to store records on who we call, text and e-mail, and which websites we visit – without any kind of warrant or reason.
“Our civil liberties have taken a battering in recent years from politicians of all backgrounds.
“Now it’s time for us to make a stand.”
The petition reads: “Dear David Cameron, respect our privacy, stop the internet and phone snooping plan. Don’t spy on our e-mail, phone and internet use. Keep your election promise to ‘reverse the rise of the surveillance state’.
“This is Britain, not China or Iran. We don’t want to government spying on our every move.”
38 Degrees is a UK-wide organisation which connects people through the internet to discuss topics and decide what issues to campaign on.
