Pier fire followed fireworks event

A BLAZE ripped through a wooden pier in Blyth late on Sunday night, severely damaging a large section of the timber structure.

The 80 to 100 yards section of the East Pier at South Harbour, Blyth, was extinguished by the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue's fireboat after Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service requested assistance.

Three further fires were located along the length of the pier involving timber sleepers, all of which had been extinguished by the fireboat shortly after 4am on Monday morning.

An investigation into the incident is currently under way.

The blaze was reported at around 10.20pm, shortly after the conclusion of a spectacular firework display held as part of the 'Blyth in a New Light' event.
