Plans in for flood defences

FLOODING of the kind that devastated Morpeth four years ago could be a thing of the past as new river defences could be built as early as next year.

The Environment Agency has applied for planning permission for a proposed flood alleviation scheme for the town following extensive consultation with residents and landowners.

It is working with Northumberland County Council to develop the scheme, and the process is expected to take 16 weeks

The scheme involves storing water upstream of Morpeth during times of flood, building new flood defences in the town and improving existing flood defences where needed.

Environment Agency project manager Anthony Myatt said: “This is a key milestone in the project.

“Over the past six months, we have been designing the scheme in detail in order to apply for planning permission.”

Subject to planning approval and weather conditions, construction work on the scheme is due to begin early next year.
