PLANS to tackle the long-running problems of stray horses roaming around Newbiggin are set to be agreed later this week.

On Tuesday Northumberland County Council confirmed it is working on details of a strategy, along with partner agencies, to deal with havoc and fear caused by the horses.

A county spokesperson said: “We recognise that the unauthorised grazing of horses on council and private land in south east Northumberland is a significant and growing problem and is of great concern to local residents.

“The council will be putting a plan of action in place, in partnership with the police, town councils, local communities and private landowners to tackle this.

“Over the coming months an additional member of staff will work with partners to find solutions to deal with the problem in the worst affected areas through a combination of education, information, horse welfare initiatives and, where necessary, enforced removal of horses.”

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said Milly, a pony seized by them from the grounds of a former school in Newbiggin, three weeks ago, is recovering.

“I can tell you that Milly is doing really well and her hoof issues have now been resolved, and she will soon be up for rehoming,” they said.
