NUISANCE bike riders are being targeted as part of a crackdown by police in south east Northumberland.

The Bedlington neighbourhood policing team has been out patrolling hotspot areas to crackdown on nuisance bikers who ride in an unlawful or anti-social manner.

The crackdown comes following concerns raised by the community about off-road bikes being ridden unlawfully on the residential streets of Bedlington.

As part of Operation East Side, officers have already up lifted a number of bikes and will continue to do so to ensure the message is clear to those who are committing these offences - this behaviour won’t be tolerated.

Sgt Michael Kelliher, of Bedlington neighbourhood policing team, said: “The thing that penalises these offenders more than anything is police seizing their vehicles and bikes.

“We will uplift any vehicle that we believe is being driven or ridden in an anti-social manner and causing nuisance to others.

“Off-road bikes are as they are titled – use for off-road.

“They are not safe or suitable for driving on the roads and we will take action on anyone caught using these bikes in an unlawful way.

“We are here to listen to the concerns of the local community and resolve any issues they may have.

“This is one issue that has been raised to us and I want to assure our residents that we are taking action and will continue to do so.

“Anyone who does have any further issues of motorbike disorder, or any other concerns, can contact the local neighbourhood team.”
