Police crack down on disorder by drunken revellers
POLICE in Bedlington are calling last orders on rowdy revellers.
Officers in the town are working with pub and club owners and bar staff to crack down on booze-fuelled disorder.
Inspector Karen Murray of Bedlington’s neighbourhood policing team, and other officers have been visiting bars to talk to licensees about how they can work together to tackle anti-social behaviour.
Insp Murray, pictured, said: “Recently, there has been a number of incidents inside licensed premises in Bedlington, and I think it’s important that we reassure the community about what is being done about it.
“We have a close relationship with those who run the pubs and bars in the area, and they know that we are there to support them.
“We meet with staff regularly to discuss any issues or incidents and to also share information with them about what’s going on.
“We provide crime prevention advice, support when incidents do take place and also help oversee the pubwatch scheme that we have set up in the area.
“There is no place for violent behaviour or disorder in Bedlington, and we will continue to take a hard line against the minority who think it’s acceptable to drink too much and cause problems.
“This is a view that is supported by the staff and owners of the pubs in Bedlington, and by working together we will tackle the problem.”
Currently, 18 premises in Bedlington are signed up to the pubwatch scheme, keeping them in close contact with officers patrolling the town and allowing them to share information about customers out to make trouble.
Anyone drinkers found to be responsible for trouble, drunkenness, damage or other criminal offences face being banned from all the pubs taking part in the scheme.
Bedlington’s neighbourhood policing team will continue to carry out high-profile patrols of the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights.
