DRUGS including morphine have been stolen, along with a handbag, from outside a shop in Ashington.

A woman went into the shop, in Lintonville Terrace, at around noon a week ago on Tuesday, leaving her handbag unattended on her mobility scooter outside.

She had just been to a pharmacy to collect prescription medication including 112 capsules of 10mg-dose morphine, 56 capsules of 100mg-dose morphine, 112 dihydrocodeine tablets and 56 temazepam pills.

The stolen handbag also had cash and a gold bracelet in it.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the theft to come forward.

Inspector Barrie Joisce, of Ashington’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “Any concoction of medication is potentially extremely dangerous, and it’s equally dangerous for people to take medication which has not been prescribed to them.

“I’d warn those responsible or anyone who finds the drugs not to consume any of them, and I would urge people not to purchase or accept medication not specifically prescribed for them.

“Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the stolen drugs should contact us as soon as possible or, if they find them, hand them in to police, a doctor’s surgery or pharmacy.”

Anyone with information shoud call police on 101 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
