Public invited to see leisure facility plans

A SERIES of open days are being held to give members of the public the opportunity to see plans for Ashington’s new community and leisure facility.

The drawings will be on display in Ashington library from Thursday until Saturday.

The new building will be the first point of contact for frontline council services along with a library housing the latest interactive technology.

There will also be a registrar’s service, advice and information point, café and meeting spaces.

The contemporary leisure facilities will feature a swimming pool, gym equipment, spa, sports hall and a studio space suitable for various classes and activities.

Representatives from Arch, Northumberland County Council, and the design team will be on-hand to explain how the plans are taking shape on Thursday from 9am to 7.30pm, then on Friday from 9am to 5pm, and Saturday from 9am to noon.

County council leader Jeff Reid said: “The council has committed to a major investment of £20m for the new facility, and the designs have been developed following extensive consultation with local people.

“Their feedback and ideas have played an important part in helping to create the blueprint for the impressive new facilities which will improve Ashington for people who live, work and study in the area.”

It is expected building work will start in spring 2013 and it will be open to the public in 2014.
