Pupils’ will see their creative words in print

Pupils from a county high school will see their work showcased as part of a project to get young people writing.

The youngsters from Bedlington’s St Benet Biscop High School are taking part in the Young Voices project, run by Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts.

Poet Kris Anderson and fiction writer Barbara Henderson have worked with pupils from Years 7 and 12 at the school to help them produce high-quality creative writing.

Now the poems produced as a result of the sessions will be showcased in a printed volume of work and on the project’s Young Voices website.

Young writer Jessica said: “I enjoy writing and making the reader feel and understand what I was both feeling and imagining.

“I just really like creative writing.”

Teacher Kerry Thorn added: “The project has been a worthwhile experience as it has forced creativity back into the classroom.”

The pupils’ writing will also be heard at a special event to celebrate the project, which will be held on Thursday, June 5, at the Culture Lab in Newcastle.

The project was funded by the Clore Duffield Foundation.
