This weekend will see the opening of a south east Northumberland sports club’s refurbished changing rooms.
The facilities at Ashington Rugby Club’s Recreation Ground have been revamped and will be officially opened on Saturday.
The club has actively sought funding from sources outside the Rugby Football Union and the major improvements have been made possible by a grant towards the cost of £20,000 from UK Coal, which operates the opencast mine at nearby Potland Burn.
The formal opening, which precedes a past players’ lunch and a Northumberland cup tie against Wallsend, will be performed by Northumberland RFU County president David Pringle.
Also in attendance will be Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery and Northumberland’s representative on the RFU Council, Danny Hodgson.
The refurbishment of the changing rooms is just one of a number of initiatives taking place in the run up to the Rugby World Cup in 2015 as the club actively seeks to raise its profile in the town and to attract newcomers to the facility and the sport.
