Local opticians raised hundreds of pounds by sleeping rough in Ashington to raise awareness and help combat homelessness in the area.

Four willing staff from the town’s Specsavers slept in minus temperatures with only a cardboard box and the clothes they were wearing at the local YMCA.

The group had to stay from 7pm to 7am to complete the challenge.

Carly Fitch, store manager, said: “It was a really challenging experience with very little sleep and incredibly cold weather.

“It really made us think about what some people have to go through night after night.

“We were the lucky ones who could jump in the car and head home to a nice warm bed the next day.”

They added: “This was an opportunity for us to reflect on how privileged we are and how difficult life can be for others.

“I would like to thank everyone that donated and I really hope our efforts can help those living on our streets right now.”
