School a class act at cabinet elections
Elections for the Northumberland Youth Cabinet were held just before Christmas and two of the five seats have been taken by Seaton Delaval's Astley High School students Natasha Comber and John-Paul Dickie and they are seen with Headteacher John Barnes.
TWO youngsters from the same school have been elected to Northumberland County Council’s youth cabinet.
John-Paul Dickie, 17, and Natasha Comber, 15, both pupils at Seaton Delaval’s Astley High School, take up their seats next month and will serve as members of the cabinet for the next two years.
The youth cabinet is made up of ten teenagers, aged 13 to 19, elected to represent the views of young people from across the county.
Astley High headteacher John Barnes said: “To have one young person from the school elected to the youth cabinet is an achievement, but to have two is outstanding.
“It reflects the calibre and quality of the young people who attend this school.
“Both students have very clear aims for what they want to achieve in their time on the cabinet which reflect the issues of importance to the young people they represent.
“I wish them all the very best and firmly believe that they will both be a big success.”
John-Paul has pledged to call for improvements to bus services and lower fares for students, as well as campaigning for the provision of more extra-curricular opportunities for young people.
Natasha will seek to promote performing arts and to encourage more young people to support community initiatives.
Also elected to the youth cabinet was Ashley Davy, 14, of the Northumberland Church of England Academy’s Josephine Butler Campus in Ashington, along with Bridget Donaldson, of King Edward VI School in Morpeth, and Kevin Wilson, of Ponteland High School.
