SUCCESSFUL businesswomen have been sharing their secrets with Year 11 pupils from schools in south east Northumberland.

The event, organised by Northumberland County Council and the Northumberland Business Service Ltd, saw 80 young women from Bedlington and Ashington attend a Women into Enterprise day as part of part of Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Female students from Ashington High School, St Benet Biscop Catholic High School in Bedlington and the Northumberland Church of England Academy in Ashington joined pupils from host school Bedlingtonshire High School for a day of inspirational talks and activities involving some of the area’s top businesswomen.

Organiser and Go Wansbeck coach Dave Gibbon said: “Although they were a little bit quiet to start with, the students really warmed up during the day. They were great ambassadors for their schools.

“The message was that setting up a business is possible.

“It just needs a great idea, some hard work and sensible advice.

“A few years ago very few people might have thought it was possible, but that’s changing now.

“I hope we’ve been able to give the girls some food for thought.”

One of the speakers was Lynn Munro, who runs a team of massage therapists across the UK.

“She told pupils how attitude and not background is the key to success.

“It doesn’t matter where you’re from as long as you’ve got the attitude and drive to succeed, you can do anything,” she said.

Women into Enterprise presenter Carole Richards, of the Northumberland Education Business Partnership, said this area was crying out for new businesses and particularly those run by women.

During the day the pupils took part in a belly dancing display – led by Angela Noble of Tribe Zuza – as well as a competition to design a shoe.
