ASHINGTON Squash Club rounded off their season in style as they brought home three awards from a presentation ceremony at Northumberland Club, Jesmond.

Their first team smashed their way into the premier division for next season as they secured promotion to the top-flight by finishing runners-up in a tough division one.

The squad claimed major awards on the night with Adam Oliver’s unprecedented 15 wins out of 15, all by a 3-0 margin, earning him the player of the division honour.

The other members of the squad were Rob Black, Dave Richardson, Chris Adamson, Mike Ogle and rapidly improving newcomer Mark Elliott who replaced the injured Mike Ogle in the second half of the season.

Ashington men’s second team also distinguished themselves by winning the League Cup Knock Out for teams in the lower divisions.

On their way to winning the trophy they beat a strong outfit from Northern Gosforth 3-2, with 60-year-old veteran Martin Kapusniak excelling with an astonishing 3-0 victory over a junior player ranked number three in England for his age group.

The final was played against old rivals Consett, and victory was secured with Nicky Dalkin winning 3-1 in the fourth rubber to give Ashington an unassailable lead after earlier wins from stalwarts Doug Roulstone and Dave Cunningham.

Ashington play out of the leisure centre in Institute Road and hold club nights on a Monday and Thursday with training and coaching available.

New members, particularly juniors, are urged to join the club to help strengthen the squads. Contact club chairman Tom Brash on (01670) 817740.
