Taxi driver is assaulted by passenger

A TAXI driver was assaulted and robbed after picking up a couple in Newcastle and taking them to Cramlington.

Officers at Northumbria Police are appealing for witnesses to the robbery, which happened in the early hours of Sunday, December 23.

The taxi driver picked up a couple from Newcastle city centre at about 4am and then headed towards Cramlington.

But at about 4.20am, the driver was assaulted in the car by the man, who struck him on the back of the head.

The pair got out of the car and, after a struggle, the offender ran off with the taxi driver’s jacket and some cash.

The victim suffered some swelling as a result of the assault, which happened in the area of Burnside First School, at Northburn.

The suspect is said to be white, aged under 30 years, about 6ft tall of slim build, with short hair shaved at the sides. He was wearing dark clothing.

The woman he was with is described as aged about 26, around 5ft 7ins tall with long straight dark hair, and wearing a black dress.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the robbery to come forward.

In particular, they are keen to trace a motorist, a man aged between 45 and 50-years-old, who came to the aid of the taxi driver in the area of the school at Northburn.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
