A Cramlington teenager is set for a life on – or, rather, under – the ocean wave after completing his basic training for the Royal Navy.

Trainee submariner Daniel Straughan has passed out after finishing a ten-week course at a training base in Cornwall.

The 18-year-old, a former pupil of Cramlington High School, said: “Training was a demanding yet enjoyable time in my career, and I hope it stands me in good stead to climb the ranks in the Royal Navy.”

Daniel’s next port of call is HMS Collingwood in Hampshire to learn about weapons systems on board submarines, safety procedures and how to carry out electrical repairs.

He will then return to Cornwall for further training.
