A group of eight teenagers from Ashington and Newbiggin have been to Kenya for two weeks to work and live in the Masai region.

The trip was open to any Year 12 student at the Northumberland Church of England Academy, who raised £22,000 in six months, through events like a race night and a ball, running a tuck-shop, a quiz, coffee morning and market stall, as well as seeking out donations from local people and businesses.

The team, working with Northumberland County Council’s Youth Service, took out four water filters, which each can provide clean water for a village of up to 500 people. They visited schools and taught local children then set about digging foundations for a new classroom.
