Tourettes sufferers to benefit from event

RESIDENTS are being urged to support a charity fundraiser which is aiming to raise cash for an ambitious summer festival.

Northumberland County Council is calling on people in Ashington to attend the charity fundraiser on Saturday to help raise funds for an event later in the year.

The north east group of the charity Tourettes Action is preparing to host a ‘Family Friendship Festival’ from May 24 to May 27 in Cramlington.

As part of its preparations, it has been holding a number of small fundraising events across the county, including a ‘Talented Touretters’ art exhibition and sale in Morpeth before Christmas.

This Saturday’s fundraiser will be held at the Fox Cover pub in Ashington from noon.

Coun Ian Lindley, the county council’s executive member for adult care, health and wellbeing, is supporting the organisers.

He said: “Tourettes Syndrome is the most misunderstood condition – in real life it is not experienced as it is often mocked on TV.

“For the sufferers and family, everyday life can be a continual series of struggles which non-sufferers can’t begin to imagine.

“We owe it to our local families, who tackle this every day, to support Tourettes Action’s fantastic idea.

“This will be a wonderful experience for people with learning disabilities and will be held for the first time ever in Northumberland.

“I really hope that local businesses and people will join us to make this happen.”

The aim is of the festival is for people with Tourettes and related brain disorders – including obsessive compulsive disorders, ADHD, autistic disorders, and other disabilities – to have fun, share experiences, learn together, and offer support.
