Town twice come from behind to win seven-goal thriller

MORPETH Town went into this match having previously been on an unbeaten run of eight games only for Billingham Town to spoil the party the previous week.

Town manager Jon King welcomed back into the squad young midfield talent Mark Grant who has been absent for over three months with a knee injury and brought in recently acquired keeper Gibson for his first game.

The match kicked off with Jarrow first to show and the visitors took a shock lead in the second minute when winger Keith Hutchinson forced the ball home from five yards following a cross from Thompson.

Then before Town could pull themselves together Jarrow rocked the home side with a second goal when midfielder Hodgson scored from ten yards following a good run from Thompson.

Following the appalling start Town began to play themselves into the game with former Hartlepool and Sheffield United player John Cullen began to call the tune in midfield and it was from one of his crossed balls that allowed Town and get back into the game when he found Polish midfielder Hembiec who calmly chipped one for Henderson to break clear before lobbing the advancing Dowell from the Jarrow Goal before heading into the empty net.

The second half saw Town come out in determined fashion and within a minute striker Steve Young had put Town on even terms when he headed in a cross from Mullon to give Jarrow keeper Dowell no chance.

Within five minutes Jarrow had put themselves back into the lead when following a mistake by Warwick Stuart Thompson broke clear to slide the ball past Gibson in the Town goal.

With Mark Grant on for John Cullen and Radek Rakocniski on for Paul Wilson Town pushed hard to try to get back into the game and following a Herron through ball to Young the striker finished in style slotting the ball low past Dowel from ten yards.

Then with ten minutes remaining Rakocniski scored the goal of the game following a good cross from Haxon on the left, the ball fell to him 12 yards wide of the goal before hitting a superb strike into the bottom corner of the net giving Dowel no chance.

Afterwards Manager Jon King said "A win is always good to see following a fair performance overall which was quite disappointing considering the run of good form the team had shown over the past matches"

Town's next match is at home against Blyth Spartans in the semi-final of the Northumberland Senior Cup, on Tuesday, Marh 4. Kick-off is 7.30pm.
