TWO people have been arrested after a woman’s body was found dead in a house in Holywell.

They attended the house following enquiries into a collision in Shiremoor, where a car crashed into a lamppost in Bertram Place.

Items found in the car led them to the address, and after forcing their way into the house they discovered the body of the woman inside.

An occupant of the car that crashed, a 57-year-old woman who was known to the victim, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

She remains in the RVI hospital in Newcastle where she is being treated for serious injuries, that are not described as life threatening.

A 32-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in police custody.

A Post Mortem examination is due to be carried out this afternoon and a formal identification of the body may take place this evening.

Northumberland Area Command Temporary Chief Superintendent Dianne Winship said: “Overnight we have had additional patrols in the Holywell area and local residents can be reassured that these will continue, not only as part of the investigation but also to address any concerns people may have.

“We believe that all those concerned in this tragic incident are known to each other and we do not believe that there is any wider danger to the public.”

Anyone with information about the death is asked to contact police on the 101 non-emergency number.
