Venues to open doors as part of event
A SERIES of venues across Blyth Valley with historical interest are set to open their doors next week as part of a national initiative.
A total of 22 buildings – including First and Second World War batteries – will be open free of charge from Thursday, September 9, to Sunday, September 12, as part of the national Heritage Open Days.
The event has been organised locally by Blyth Valley Heritage Ltd, who set up in February 2009 to continue the work previously carried out by the former Blyth Valley Council.
The charity launched this year's initiative at Seaton Delaval Hall last week, with local volunteers and officials from Northumberland County Council in attendance.
Around 40,000 leaflets have been distributed to homes in the area, with organisers hoping to equal or beat the 5,000 people who visited the attractions last year.
Among the venues that will be open and holding events are Seaton Delaval Hall, RNLI Blyth Lifeboat Station, six churches, Harbour Commission Offices, Blyth Masonic Buildings, the Watch House in Seaton Sluice, and Roberts Battery in Old Hartley.
There will also be talks at Blyth Library, Cramlington Library and at the New Hartley Memorial Hall, as well as trips on the Blyth all-weather lifeboat and music at Blyth Bandstand.
Vintage buses will also be running from Blyth Links Car Park to some of the venues.
John Stanger-Leathes, a director at Blyth Valley Heritage Ltd, said: "We had in excess of 5,000 attendees at this event last year, and hope to see an increase this year."
