Website will remember the town’s fallen

A former Ashington man has started work on a website to commemorate soldiers from the town who lost their lives during World War One.

Alain Grint, who now lives in France, has started work on the memorial website, which, when completed, will list all of the 700 Ashington soldiers who died during the war.

The website – www.ashingtonmemorial.com – will include details about each soldier, along with images.

Alain said: “The aim is to complete a First World War memorial list of all those who died, their names and what was happening when that individual died.

“It is still a work in progress, I have uploaded information on about 200 soldiers so far and I have information for around 700.”

The website is being launched this year, as it is the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War One.

Alain added: “I grew up in Ashington and I felt I wanted to do something to support the town where I grew up.”

Alain is looking for photographs of anyone from Ashington who served in the war to get in touch so they can be added to the website.

Anyone with images can contact Alain at alain.grint@sfr.fr
